| Glossary of Terms:
|
|
| Hotel |
| Hotel properties usually feature rooms and suites
without kitchen facilities, and have extensive services like
daily housekeeping, and on-site amenities such as any combination
of the following: hot tub and/or heated in/outdoor pool, fitness
room, 24 hour front desk, restaurant, bar, retail stores, elevators,
indoor or outdoor parking for which a fee applies, room service,
etc. One full en suite bathroom per room. Some hotels have self-service
laundry facilities as well as in-house valet laundry/dry-cleaning
service. Some hotels are pet-friendly in certain room categories.
Mostly suitable for adults, and families with children who are
old enough to have their own room/s. Hotels tend to be more
expensive than condo accommodation, but are often more centrally
located than condo's. |
|
|
| Condo |
| These self-catering condominium or townhouse
units include some form of kitchen facilities, weekly or bi-weekly
housekeeping, indoor or outdoor parking which is often free
of charge, no elevators. Most often one bathroom per bedroom,
with master bathroom en-suite, but this occasionally varies
(ie: a 2-bedroom may have 1 bathroom, or a 3-bedroom may have
4 bathrooms). If there is no washer/dryer in the unit, there's
usually a laundry room with coin-operated machines in the complex.
Check-in/out location is often not at the same place as the
condo property. Most condo's are not pet-friendly. Condo's are
suitable for all guests, especially extended families and those
with small children. Condo's tend to be more economical than
hotel/lodge-style accommodation, but are usually not as centrally
located. |
|
|
| Lodge |
| This is a combination of hotel and condo-style
accommodations. Units, located in one large building, often
feature some form of kitchen facilities, sometimes daily housekeeping,
a few on-site amenities but not as extensive as the hotel properties,
elevator, front desk, etc. If there is no washer/dryer in the
unit, there's usually a laundry room with coin-operated machines
in the building. Some lodges have a few pet-friendly units. |
|
|
| Hotel room |
| A traditional bedroom usually with king, queen,
two double or two single beds, en-suite bathroom with vanity,
bath and/or shower, toilet. No kitchen facilities although better
properties include tea/coffee-making machines. All rooms have
a television set, often with on-demand movies and games, at
least one telephone, and hotel rooms often offer internet access. |
|
|
| Studio |
| An hotel room with some form of kitchen facilities.
Some have fully equipped kitchens, while others only have efficiency
units with just a small fridge, microwave, toaster and kettle.
Bed configuration is similar to an hotel room but some have
a double or queen size murphy bed, and some studios also have
a double or queen size pull-out sofabed. |
|
|
| 1 Bedroom unit |
| Similarly equipped to a studio, but these units
have the bedroom private from the living area. The bathroom
is usually off the living area, and full kitchen facilities
are often included. One-bedroom units in some hotels do not
have kitchens. Bed configurations vary but options are mostly
king, queen or 2 singles or 2 double beds in the bedroom, most
often with a double or queen size pull-out sofabed in the living
area. |
|
|
| 2 Bedroom unit |
| Similar to a 1-bedroom, except that there are
two bedrooms private from the living area. Often with one en-suite
bathroom, and one bathroom off the living area, although some
2-bedroom units only feature one bathroom off the living area.
Bed configuration does vary but is most often king or queen
in the master, 2 doubles or 2 singles or an adult-size bunk
set in the second, and a sofabed in the living area. |
|
|
| 3 Bedroom unit & larger, and private
homes |
| Three or more bedrooms private from living area,
the number of bathrooms can vary but is usually at least two
full bathrooms (one of which may be en suite), or a bathroom
for each bedroom (usually en suite on master bedroom only) -
more deluxe units may also have a powder room. Usually with
full kitchen, and bed configurations which vary widely. |
|
|
| Loft |
| Lofts occur either on their own or in conjunction
with larger units. A loft is simply an elevated area that has
a view over the lower level - the loft most often houses a sleeping
area. Lofts do not offer complete privacy from the common area.
Bathrooms in lofted units may be up- and/or downstairs. |
|
|
| Den |
| A den is an extra room that may or may not
offer additional sleeping space. Usually dens offer some level
of privacy from the living area, but are often not completely
private. They do tend to be smaller in size. These rooms are
not called bedrooms because they may not have a cupboard (although
they may have a chest-of-drawers) and/or a window to the outside. |
|
|
| Kitchen |
| All kitchens are equipped with some level of
cutlery, crockery, and glassware. The size of the kitchen will
determine the extent of cooking utensils and large appliances,
and small electrical items like coffee makers and toasters.
"Full" kitchens usually have everything - fully equipped
as you're used to at home. "Kitchenettes" vary widely
but often have a microwave, toaster, kettle or coffee maker,
minifridge, etc. |
